History of
Palm Beach County Newspapers
• 1894
- The Daily Lake Worth News, under editor Bobo Dean, was formed as a
seasonal publication.
• 1898
- James M. Cox, Sr., a former reporter for the Cincinnati Enquirer,
purchased his first newspaper, The Dayton Daily News.
• 1905
- The Lake Worth Daily News, owned by Henry M. Flagler, was sold to
Richard Davies.
• 1906
- The Palm Beach Life magazine, "America's Oldest Society
Journal," was established.
• 1907
- The Lake Worth Daily News came to be known as the Palm Beach Daily
News, "The Shiny Sheet." Editor Ruby Edna Pierce began a
career editorializing the beauties of Palm Beach for the next 47 years.
• 1909
- The Palm Beach County, a weekly paper, was established on Narcissus
Avenue by a Texas job printer, Donald H. Conkling. West Palm Beach had
been chartered for one year and had a population of 5,577.
• 1916
- The Palm Beach County changed the masthead to the Palm Beach Post and
became a daily. The location was moved to the old Farmer's Bank and
Trust building on Clematis Street.
• 1920
- James M. Cox, Sr., a former congressman and Ohio's first three-term
governor, was nominated Democratic candidate for president of the United
States. Cox and running mate, Franklin D. Roosevelt, lost the election
to Warren G. Harding.
• 1922
- Gainesville native Frank P. Filder established the afternoon paper,
The Palm Beach Times.
• 1923
- The Delray News began publication with the slogan, "Everybody
Loves Delray."
• 1934
- The Post and Times merged early in 1934 with the Times moving to the
Post's plant on Datura Street.
• 1947
- John H. Perry, owner of Perry Publications, purchased the Palm Beach
Post and The Palm Beach Times
• 1948
- Lora Britt started the Delray Beach Journal, a lively competition for
the Delray News.
• 1957
- James M. Cox, Sr., died at age 87. James M. Cox, Jr., with 45 years
experience in the newspaper business, assumed the Board Chairmanship of
Cox Enterprises, Inc.
• 1959
- Perry Publications purchased the Delray Journal and combined the
Journal and News to form the Delray Beach News Journal.
• 1966
- Robert Murray, while editor-publisher of the Delray News Journal,
created the Boynton Beach News Journal.
• 1969
- On July 1, 1969, Cox Enterprises, Inc., purchased all the papers and
formed Palm Beach Newspapers, Inc. At the time of the purchase, James M.
Cox., Jr., stated: "Becoming part of the thriving West Palm Beach
region is a pleasure and a privilege for me and my associates. We will
labor diligently to give the area outstanding newspapers. Believing that
editorial freedom with responsibility is the first precept of good
newspapering, your editors will strive for total objectivity in the news
columns and speak from the editorial pages without fear or favor. There
is no such thing as a home office for Cox Newspapers. Each newspaper is
autonomous and has its own separate and distinct editorial voice. Our
newspapers here will concern themselves with the advancement of this
area first, last, and always. We hope to earn your respect and
support."
• 1974
- James Cox, Jr., died. Garner Anthony, Jr., of Honolulu, took control
as chairman of Cox Enterprises.
• 1976
- Cecil B. Kelley, SR., with 51 years in newspapers, retired from the
position of president-publisher. .
• 1979
- The name of The Palm Beach Times was changed to The Evening Times.
• 1981
- The Florida Pennysaver, Inc., a subsidiary of PBNI, began publication.
The Pennysaver is a total market coverage shopper serving Palm Beach
County.
• 1985
- Daniel J. Mahoney, Jr., was named Chairman of the Board of Palm Beach
Newspapers, Inc. Tom Giuffrida, from Atlanta, Georgia, succeeded Mahoney
as Publisher of the Palm Beach Post & Evening Times and president of
the affiliated publications.
Cox Communications, Inc., a public company, merged into Cox Enterprises.
• 1986
- The Florida Pennysaver, Inc., became a branch of PBNI.
The Delray Beach News Journal and Boynton Beach News Journal ceased
publication in November. The Palm Beach Post increased its staff in
editorial, advertising and circulation to better serve the Delray and
Boynton Beach area.
• 1987
- James Cox Kennedy was named to replace Garner Anthony as chairman and
chief executive of Cox Enterprises, Inc., upon Mr. Anthony's retirement
in 1987.
• The Palm Beach Post and The Evening Times were
merged into a single newspaper with both morning and afternoon editions.
The last issue of The Evening Times was published on May 1.
• 1994
- Palm Beach Life ceased publication in May.
• 1995
- In June, The Palm Beach Post moved into a new
$17 million building, next door to the old building on Dixie Highway.
Part of the former main office was demolished and the remainder is being
remodeled. The buildings have been connected by a bridge.
